Phthalates are chemicals used in making plastics soft and flexible. You can be sure to find phthalates in many products, such as garden hoses, medical devices, toys. Phthalates have been extensively studied regarding their safety and effects on humans, and they are therefore regarded as safe. But a recent study by epidemiologist Dr. Shanna Swan from the University of Rochester Medical School is putting a pressure on congress to rethink the use of phthalates.
Leslie Stahl of 60 Minutes took on phthalates and “found” that the higher the level of phthalates in the urine of mothers during pregnancy seemed to have caused greater problems eventually in their male offspring.
