Hypospadias: A Heartbreaking Birth Defect

Hypospadias is a birth defect that affects the unborn baby’s genitalia. In a baby with hypospadias, the urethral opening is not located on the top of the penis, but may appear in other places, such as the underside. Worst, hypospadias can have various degrees of severity.

A person with hypospadias find it very difficult to urinate, especially aggravated by the downward curve (called a “chordee”) of the penis, which is more noticeable during an erection.

Hypospadias occurs in one of every 300 males born, and its cause is not exactly known. However, many believe that the lessened male hormone in the fetus prevents the urethra from getting fully developed. Hypospadias is most often corrected or treated using surgery, specifically in redirecting the urethra to the normal position on the penis. Also, a tube may be inserted and a new hole recreated to give the patient a normal functioning penis.
